We’ve heard this rumor once before and now here it is again: Google is
said to be preparing a $99 Nexus tablet for a Q4 2012 unveiling,
according to Taiwan makers. These are supply chain makers I’m talking
about and the $99 Nexus tablet comes with an ARM architecture single
core CPU 8950 made by a Chinese company.
Said company is WonderMedia Technologies and on board of the new and cheaper tablet we’ll also find a HUVA TN panel made by Taiwanese HannStar Display, according to the same sources. Quanta Computer will handle production of the device per se and this Taiwanese company has been associated with making the Kindle Fire tablet and BlackBerry PlayBook, which turned out fine. Quanta and ASUS declined to comment. One thing is for sure: both ASUS and Google may be selling the product at loss.
I’m also sure that Chinese white box tablet makers are unhappy about this product, since it undermines their already very low prices and increases pressure on their products and prices. This $99 can also be a preemptive strike for the iPad Mini.
