Nexus 7 Tablet Runs Chromium OS via Port

The famous Nexus 7 tablet is preloaded with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, but you already knew that. What you didn’t know is that several others platforms were ported to it and among them we must mention Ubuntu and now Chromium OS. Ubuntu was not only running on the Nexus tablet, but Canonical also released an official tool to help Linux fans install the OS, version 12.04.

Back to the Chromium OS, the platform is being ported to the Nexus 7 right now, thanks to the work of a developer named Hexxeh. Chromium has the advantage of supporting Chrome extensions and apps, that allow you to use Chrome on a mobile device just like you would on Windows, Mac or a Linux desktop. The port is a work in progress for now and it needs more alteration before being released to the general public. The Nexus 7 features an unlocked bootloader and a 1.2 GHz Tegra 3 processor to play with, plus 1 GB of RAM.
For those of you not familiar with Chromium OS, this is a Linux-based operating system, created by Google to work with web apps. It was announced back in 2009 and turned into an open source project. It supports both x86 and ARM devices and it can be compiled from the downloaded source code. It has a minimalistic UI, that resembles the one of the Chrome web browser.
